Affogato is a true Italian classic. With this dessert, a scoop of vanilla ice cream is topped with hot espresso. Of course I like to give a nice twist to classics and this time I chose matcha tea instead of espresso. The freshness of the scoop of ice cream with the warmness of the matcha tea, that is a fantastic combination. Also super simple to make! This recipe is guaranteed to work. ;-)
What do you need? (For about 5 people)
Do you make the ice cream yourself? Then you need the following ingredients:
- 5 dl cream
- 150 grams mascarpone
- 60 grams of chopped stem ginger
- 3 tablespoons stem ginger syrup
- The marrow of 1 vanilla pod
- 2 dl matcha tea
You can of course just buy ice cream in the supermarket, then the recipe is even simpler. But we also chose to make the ice cream ourselves, so you are 100% sure which ingredients are used.

How do you make affogato with matcha tea?
- Take a large bowl and mix the cream and mascarpone with a hand blender. Add vanilla, ginger and syrup. Mix it all well and then put it in a container.
- Put it in the freezer for 20 minutes. Then take it out and mix well again, so that the ice cream becomes nice and creamy. Then place it back in the freezer for at least 1 hour.
- Make matcha tea by putting 1 to 2 bamboo spoons in a bowl and slowly adding a small splash of warm water. Use the bamboo beater to beat everything evenly. Add the remaining water and keep beating. Add the matcha tea to a pitcher.
- Put a few scoops of ice cream in a bowl and pour the matcha tea over it.
