1 cup of matcha tea contains as many nutrients as about 10 cups of regular green tea.
Why? With matcha, the tea leaves are ground into powder, so you drink the entire tea leaf. This way you get all the healthy substances. This is not the case with regular green tea, you throw away a large part of the tea (and because of this you do not get all the substances!)
The choice is therefore quickly made, because matcha is super healthy.
But which nutrients are responsible for these health benefits? And what exactly do these substances do? I'll list the nutrients and benefits for you.
Matcha is packed with antioxidants
In a previous blog I already told you why antioxidants are so important for your body.
Many fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, but there are some fruits that stand out completely. For example, blueberries and goji berries are known as the superfoods that contain many antioxidants.
But did you know that matcha is also packed with antioxidants? It contains even more than blueberries! Research shows that matcha contains about 20 times more ORAC units than blueberries. ORAC is the oxygen radical absorbance capacity , which is the method by which the amount of antioxidants is measured.
The main benefits of antioxidants:
- They protect your cells against free radicals. These are substances that can cause damage and cause numerous diseases. Antioxidants strengthen your immune system so that your body is better protected.
- Antioxidants protect your body against heart disease, stroke and even cancer, among other things.
EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) is a powerful antioxidant
Not only is matcha high in antioxidants, it also contains a specific type of antioxidant. Matcha contains many catechins, including EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), a substance that is a much more powerful antioxidant than vitamins C and E.
You can only find this substance in tea and that is quite unique! It is thanks to EGCG that matcha has such a medicinal effect.
Amino acids have a calming effect
Our body needs amino acids because they serve as building blocks for proteins.
We need proteins, because they are essential for the growth and repair of our bones, skin, muscles, bones, hair and nails.
But that's not the only reason why amino acids are necessary for a healthy body:
matcha contains L-theanine, this is an amino acid that has a calming effect.
L-theanine helps you relax but also ensures concentration.
By the way, matcha tea contains 5 times more L-theanine than black or green tea, another reason to switch to a cup of matcha a day!
Theine in matcha provides a clear focus
Just like coffee, matcha contains caffeine (this is called theine in tea). It gives you extra energy for about 6 hours while it boosts your concentration.
But matcha has one important advantage compared to coffee: you experience alertness without the adverse effects that you do have with coffee (with coffee you often suffer from a caffeine crash afterwards, with matcha you do not).
This is because the substance L-theanine slows down the effect of theine. The result: you feel relaxed yet sharp. This is exactly why it has been drunk by Buddhist monks for centuries. Focus is required during meditation, matcha helps to focus but at the same time provides a relaxed feeling.
Chlorophyll gives your body a detox
Our body is perfectly capable of cleaning itself, but you can support these processes. The chlorophyll present in matcha helps to detoxify your body.
Chlorophyll can absorb toxic substances (such as harmful metals, for example) and then removes them. It therefore ensures a thorough detox of your body.
Matcha: a superfood that protects your body
Matcha is rich in fibres, proteins, vitamins A, B, C, E, minerals, amino acids… all substances that are important for a healthy body. Specifically, it has the following advantages:
- It protects your body from aging
- You get a huge energy boost from it
- But you also experience a relaxed feeling and feel alert
- It boosts your metabolism and supports weight loss
- Matcha helps to strengthen your immune system
- It detoxifies your body
How do you prepare it?
Do you want to experience the benefits of matcha yourself? Already with 1 cup a day you will experience the health benefits .
The advantage of matcha is that it is versatile, you can use it in many dishes. For example, go for a matcha latte, add it to yogurt, put it in your smoothie or make a delicious dessert with it.
